Gardening in Colorado is Challenging!

Gardening in Colorado requires careful planning.  The combination of high altitude, warm days, cool nights, sun, drought, frost and snow makes gardening a challenge.  Different areas of your landscape will supply varying soil conditions and micro-climates.

Selecting Plants, Shrubs, Trees and Groundcovers

Plantings will be used for a variety of purposes - from providing shelter, shade, privacy or sheer beauty.  Each selection must take into consideration many factors: form, color, texture, growth habits, mature size, evergreen or deciduous, sun, shade and water requirements to name a few.

We can help you to select trees, shrubs, plants and groundcovers that will meet your needs and thrive in our Colorado environment.

This island surrounded by a circular driveway is the main focus point when entering the property.

Concrete cut blocks create the perimeter of the island with red flagstone pathways and patio and native river rock for the rock garden.  Large native river rock rims the pond and fountain.

A combination of perennials, annuals and rose bushes were planted around the existing evergreens.

What is Xeriscaping?

Xeriscaping is a type of landscaping that has water conservation as a major objective. This is achieved by selecting plants that are indigenous or have adapted to this area. Xeriscape restricts high water use plants, such as bluegrass, to areas where it will serve a purpose or need.  Because not all plants need the same amount of water, a xeriscape groups plants together with similar water needs and adaptability to the site.

  1. Plan and design your plantings carefully
  2. Evaluate soil and improve if necessary
  3. Create practical turf areas
  4. Use appropriate plants and group according to their water needs
  5. Water efficiently with properly designed irrigation systems
  6. Use organic mulches to reduce evaporation
  7. Practice appropriate maintenance:
  • Watering
  • Mowing
  • Weeding
  • Fertilizing
  • Deadheading
  • Pruning
  • Replacing and Adding Plants
  • Replenishing Mulch
  • Adding Soil Amendment
