Grading, Drainage and Erosion Control

The first step in the construction phase is to insure that the site drains properly and that all usage areas such as patios, terraces and play areas are level.   Underground drainage systems are installed to direct runoff away from the home and use areas.  Rock or timber retaining walls are also installed to prevent erosion and runoff.

Heavy equipment is used to deliver or carry materials such as these large boulders used to rim a set of flagstone steps leading to a detached barn/garage.

Irrigation Systems

In some cases, underground irrigation systems are installed in garden and lawn areas during this phase.  In addition, the top soil is improved in preparation for the planting phase.

With flagstone from Lyons and boulders from Idaho Springs, these steps fit beautifully into the environment, enhancing the beauty of the property.

The landscape is finally completed with the addition of a new sod lawn and installation of three to four hundred perennials and ground covers.

Terraces and Steps

Terraces are often necessary to shore-up and level sloping land.  The number of terraces and steps is determined by the degree of slope and its intended use.  Steps are often made of flagstone or treated lumber.

This new home was improved by the installation of a small rock wall used to define a pathway to the house.

A two-tiered terrace with treated lumber steps was constructed to shore up the sloping land behind the house.
